The battle for Texas began in earnest Wednesday as Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama laid the groundwork for costly campaigns that could propel them to the Democratic nomination for president.

The March 4 primary offers a bounty of 228 Democratic delegates in Texas. Republicans will compete for 140 delegates, but with John McCain pulling away from the field, the state won't be as critical.

Texas' size, diversity and expensive media markets make campaigning difficult here. Success comes with a grass-roots organization that moves voters from the front porches to the polls.

A new TIME poll finds...Though the real election is nine months away, Sen. Barack Obama would fare slightly better than Sen. Hillary Clinton in a head to head match-up with Sen. John McCain if the general election were held today, a new TIME poll reveals.
