Dear Friend,

I've decided to enter the special election for State Senate District 17 and we're kicking off the campaign in a big way at our new headquarters this Sunday. I'd really like for you to be there.

The special election, caused by Republican Kyle Janek's retirement, is a rare opportunity for the Democrats to take back a seat in the Texas Senate.

I decided to enter this race because of the incredible opportunity to make progress on the issues I care about the most: public school education, access to health care and ethics reform. Adding one Democratic vote to the Texas Senate could make all the difference in the world, whether by stopping vouchers and cuts to children's health insurance, or by pushing for real progress on preparing our kids for college or passing ethics reforms.

But we won't get that important Democratic vote in the Texas Senate unless I can count on your support. I'll need your vote, your time block-walking, your help spreading the word and any other help you care to give. But what I'd like you to do right now is join Alison, Atlee, Connally and me at the headquarters opening this Sunday. My great friend, State Senator Rodney Ellis, will be the master of ceremonies, State Rep. Ellen Cohen will introduce me, and we'll be joined by a host of local elected officials.

We'll have plenty of hot dogs and cold drinks to go around. We need you and your friends to join us.

P.S. - Independent polling shows that we are in a great position to win this race. Here's what the pollster, Jeff Smith, concluded about our chances based on his data:

"The combination of Bell's visibility and the voters' disenchantment with the Republican state legislature propel Bell to comfortable margins in both uninformed and informed trial heats with candidates clearly identified by party affiliation. Should he enter the race, Chris Bell would be the immediate frontrunner in a very winnable contest."
