Wesley Clark: Nix Limbaugh From Armed Forces Radio

In a blog to the Huffington Post, former NATO Supreme Commander Wesley Clark called for Congress to immediately take steps to remove conservative radio personality Rush Limbaugh from Armed Forces Radio.

Last week, Rush Limbaugh labeled any American soldier who supports an end to the war in Iraq as "phony," noted Clark.

"We challenged Limbaugh through an email campaign to invite VoteVets.org's Jon Soltz to his show and repeat these same insults to an Iraq war veteran's face. Over 10,000 people responded and emailed Rush -- but to our disappointment, he has refused to respond to our request.

"It's time to put real pressure on Rush Limbaugh. His show is broadcast on Armed Forces Radio, and this time we are going to go straight to the lifeblood of Rush's show -- Congress. Congress has the power to remove Rush Limbaugh from Armed Forces Radio, and it won't be as easy for elected officials to ignore our call."

Clark further decried the fact that Republicans in Congress have drafted a resolution supporting Rush Limbaugh, "commending [his] relentless efforts to build and maintain troop morale through worldwide radio broadcasts and personal visits to conflict regions."

"That's outrageous," concluded Clark. "Rush Limbaugh's 'phony soldiers' comment should not be commended -- it should be condemned. And it's time to tell Congress to act swiftly to hold Rush Limbaugh accountable."

    SPIEGEL ONLINE - WEST WING
    Bush's Hopeless Heirs

    By Gabor Steingart in Washington

The conservative age in America is coming to an end. The president is in a seriously weakened position, and the Republican candidates vying to take his place in the White House all look like minnows in comparison.

If you want to hit an American conservative where it hurts, just mention the names of the three great Republican presidents: Abraham Lincoln, the president who held America together despite the Civil War; Dwight D. Eisenhower, the World War II general who, as president, defied communism; and Ronald Reagan, the man who supposedly defeated the Soviet empire.

The men running for the Republican nomination for the most important political office in the Western world seem like political minnows by comparison. It would be no exaggeration to say that none of these men can even measure up to the current president, George W. Bush.

Not even their personal lives conform to the values they preach. With only one exception, the candidates currently leading the Republican pack have all been married more than once. The frontrunner, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, is on wife number three.

Giuliani, who seeks to market himself as being tough on terrorism, also has another problem: He has appeared in drag at a number of parties in the past, appearances that are naturally available for public viewing on the Internet. He campaigned in favor of abortion while running for New York mayor, because it was opportune in that race -- now he is seeking to reverse his stance on the issue.

    Thank You, Dan Rather

    By Leslie Griffith

Thank you, Dan Rather. It's balls to the wall time, and as a fellow Texan, you sure came through.

As an investigative journalist who worked as both a reporter and anchor for the San Francisco Bay Area's highest-rated newscast for 22 years, I can only say what happened to you nationally was also happening locally. You were told to conform to a Republican agenda or shut up. When you refused to march in step, you got Bush-whacked.

I read your brief and I know the drill. The erosion was slow and many of us barely noticed the small chiseling away of who and what we once were. Anchors and reporters depend on high ratings. If ratings fall in television, people get fired. In the months following 9/11, the president's approval rating was 86 percent, and that's when many in commercial journalism lost their way. To disagree or even ask a disagreeable question regarding the president and his decisions was interpreted as disloyal by many media corporations.

But now we have learned. Get the trash can ready to catch the chips, because the chisel is swinging back the other way and we as journalists are about to regain our voices and America's trust. Dan - the Man, as we call him in Texas - is reminding the media conglomerates how it is supposed to work. News and those who report it are not supposed to be for sale. Dan remembers, and he's about to explain it to us on a national scale, but first some explanations from my field of vision as to how we got here.
