IRAQ WAR PROTEST
REMINDER: IRAQ WAR PROTEST TODAY, 10/26
WHEN: 4:15 PM
WHERE: REED ARENA
This afternoon, Friday, October 26, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates will receive the 2007 George Bush Award for Excellence in Public Service at Reed Arena on the Texas A&M campus at 5 PM. Members of the Brazos Valley Coalition Against the War and its Texas A&M Student Chapter will gather beginning at 4:15 outside the entrances to the arena to welcome Secretary Gates home to Bryan-College Station, and to remind him and the members of his audience of the ongoing and unacceptable costs of the Iraq War. We want everyone to know that even here in the heart of Bush country many citizens oppose this continuation of this war. Brings friends, family members, and signs; we'll also be distributing a flyer detailing the true costs of the war (see attached). Parking at Reed is free and open to the public--no A&M tag needed.
Spread the word--Let's make our voices heard. Secretary Gates: End the War Now! Bring Our Troops Home!
BRAZOS VALLEY WRITERS AGAINST THE WAR TO READ NEXT FRIDAY, 11/2, AT VETERANS FOR PEACE MOVIE NIGHT
The next Veterans for Peace free movie night is Friday, November 2 at the Palace Theater, 105 S. Main in downtown Bryan. As a special treat this month, the Brazos Valley Writers Against the War -- Jeff Stumpo, Larry Heineman, Janet McCann, Chuck Taylor, Angie Cruz, and Paul Christensen -- will read from their works starting at 7 PM.. There will be a showing of the movie “Good Morning Vietnam” at 8:30. It’s also First Friday and Art Step downtown so there will be lots to do and see.
The primary goal of this movie night is to offset the onslaught of military advertising and recruiting activities currently targeting our young and their parents by presenting a more realistic view of US militarism, war, and the impact of war on military personnel and civilians caught in the middle. However, all are welcome and encouraged to come. For more information touchst@cy-net.net or phone 777-8758.

POLITICAL RACES: HIS AND HERS
Dallas Morning News - October 26, 2007
Rick Noriega, the sole Democratic contender to challenge U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, is more than committed to politics. He's married to it. The Army lieutenant colonel and state representative from Houston's East End was set to fight San Antonio plaintiffs lawyer Mikal Watts in the March primary, in what would have been an expensive and close fight. That changed this week when Mr. Watts stepped out of the contest, saying that the campaign was taking a toll on his family. No other candidates have announced that they're interested in the Democratic primary, though the filing deadline isn't until January.

I am really sensitive to this because I don’t want it to turn into a witch hunt in our schools. But FYI for anyone who is interested. Thank you TV Facts for bringing this to our attention.

Over the past 24 hours the Associated Press has broken a story on child sexual abuse in America's public school system. If you have not seen the article, please see the links below.
According to the article, "An Associated Press investigation found more than 2,500 cases over five years in which educators were punished for actions from bizarre to sadistic. There are 3 million public school teachers nationwide, most devoted to their work. Yet the number of abusive educators-nearly three for every school day-speaks to a much larger problem in a system that is stacked against victims."
Darkness to Light is a nonprofit organization based in Charleston, South Carolina. Our mission is to raise awareness and teach prevention of child sexual abuse. Our prevention training program, Stewards of Children, is a third-party evaluated, evidence-based program which teaches adults how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Recently awarded the prestigious McGruff Crime Prevention Program Award for Excellence, the Stewards of Children prevention program is available both online and in an instructor-led course. We currently have facilitators in 44 states, the District of Columbia, five countries, and one protectorate.
For more information about hosting the Stewards of Children prevention program, please call Scotty's House at 979-775-4695.
